Located within the town of Babylon, New York, Amityville is a village of Suffolk County. The village of Amityville had a population of 9,253 people when the 2010 United States Census was taken. The village is situated along the west side by East Massapequa, to the east side by Copiague, to the south side by Great South Bay, and to North Amityville's north side. Overall, the Village of Amityville spans 2.5 square miles, with .4 square miles of that being water.

In 1653, Huntington settlers made their way to this region while searching for a source of salt hay. Chief Wyandanch granted the first deed of land in Amityville in 1658. The area was called Huntington West Neck South originally, and it is located along the border of Suffolk County and Great South Bay. Now known as the town of Babylon, it is said that the Amityville village name was changed in 1846 as residents worked to establish the new post office after a town meeting got out of control. Others claim that the name came from a boat that a mill owner by the name of Samuel Ireland had called the Amity.

Incorporated in March 1894, the village became a top-rated tourist destination due to the larger hotels along the bay and significantly-sized homes in the region. It is said that Annie Oakley was a frequent guest of a vaudevillian named Fred Stone and that Will Rogers also stumbled across Clocks Boulevard from Stone. There was also a house within the community that had been owned by gangster Al Capone.
